SINGAPORE - Taiwanese getai singer Hao Hao swept three awards, including the Most Popular Singer, Best Male Emcee and Best Male Getai Singer, at the Shin Min/Wanbao Getai Awards on Saturday (Sept 30) night.
The 36-year-old, who made Singapore his home after his getai debut in 2007, beat favourites Lee Pei Fen and Yuan Jin for the title of Most Popular Singer.
Lee won Best Female Emcee and Most Popular Singer (Online Votes), while Yuan won Best Female Getai Singer.
Director Royston Tan also bagged the Getai Movie Achievement Award - one of two special awards that were presented for the first time.
Tan wrote and directed the movie 881, which gave a new lease of life to the local getai scene when it was released in 2007, said the Singapore Press Holdings in a statement.
The other special award, Getai Contribution Award, was given to Liu Ling Ling.
The awards show, held at the Paya Lebar Sheng Hong Temple, included an opening item featuring the original cast of 881.
Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung was the guest of honour at the event, which saw about 4,000 people attending.
The annual Shin Min/Wanbao Getai Awards is organised by SPH's Chinese evening newspapers, Shin Min Daily News and Lianhe Wanbao.
The "Most Popular" awards were based on votes cast by readers of both evening dailies, as well as online voting, while winners in the "Best" category were picked by a panel of judges comprising journalists from both papers as well as local media industry experts.
