1. WHITE TANGERINE

It is East meets West at White Tangerine cafe, which has opened its second outlet at Downtown East. The menu ranges from dim sum to pasta to brunch items.

Dim sum options (available from 8am)include salted egg yolk custard buns ($4.20 for three), fresh prawn cheong fun ($4.20), deep-fried prawn dumpling ($4.20) and century egg with lean meat congee ($4.90). Asian dishes (available from 11am) include shrimp wonton noodles ($7.50), black pepper beef rice with egg ($8.50), cold tofu and century egg ($8) and chicken mushroom hor fun ($7.50).

For Western dishes, the menuhas breakfast fare (8amto 3pm) such as 63deg slow-cooked egg ($10) with sauteed mushrooms and salmon on toast and cheddar cheese; and breakfast waffle ($12) with scrambled eggs, bacon, baked beans, butter and maple syrup.

Main courses (from 11am) include duck confit ($18, photo 1), beer-battered fish and chips ($14), seafood marinara ($16) and spatchcock spring chicken ($16)with a side of tomato pasta. Complete your meal with desserts such as molten chocolate lava cake ($10),Oreo cheesecake ($7) and gelato (from $3.50 for a single scoop). There is another White Tangerine in China Square Central.

2. HONG KONG WONTON NOODLE

Almost two months after thefamous Mak’s Noodle fromHongKongopened at The Centrepoint,sushi restaurant chain Itacho Sushihas launched itsownwontonnoodle shop, simply calledHongKongWonton Noodle.

The menu includes the signature prawn wonton noodle ($6.80 or $7.80) and stewed beef brisket noodle ($7.80, photo 2), as well as dry noodle options such as chicken feet with mushroom ($7.80), pig’s trotter in red fermented beancurd sauce ($7.80) and spicy pork($7.80). Instead of the usual yellow egg noodles, diners can choose from thick noodles, rice noodles and hor fun.

Side dishes include stewed mushroom ($9.80), deep-fried prawn dumpling ($8.80) and sliced beef with ginger and green onion ($10.80).

3. THIRD PLACE

Dining in an industrial estate does not have to be boring. Head toThird Place in Tuas, a cafeteria by day, with 12 stalls serving a range of food both local and international. By night, the lights are dimmed and the place transforms into a zichar eatery and tapas bar serving craft beer and cider.

Zichar dishes include baked pork rib with coffee sauce (from $14), and beancurd with hon-shimeiji mushrooms (from $12), as well as seafood dishes such as Nonya-style steamed garoupa (seasonal price), chilli crab (seasonal price, photo 3), and crispy prawn with cereal (from $16).

On the tapas menu are options such as Cajun chicken wings ($8), crispy German pork knuckle ($17), tandoori vegetable kebab ($7) and Peking duck pizza ($8). Third Place is run by the Select Group, which is known for its catering business. It is also located at JTC MedTech One in Taman Jurong and there is another branch at JTC CleanTech One, off Nanyang Avenue, which does not include the zichar and tapas offerings.

4. OLD BOYS GALLERY

What used to be an art gallery in Kampong Bahru has been turned into a contemporary bistro serving Western-fusion cuisine.

At Old Boys Gallery, the menu features pastas such as meatball marinara ($14.90), roast pork aglio olio ($14.90) and mushroom carbonara ($12.90). Burger lovers can go for the beef Manster Burger ($17.90, photo 4) or pork Por-q-pine ($17.90). Both burgers come with cheese, bacon, egg and caramelised onions, and are served with fresh greens and fries.

Other dishes include Spamchips ($9) with wasabi mayonnaise; Potato Head ($7.90), sweet potato fries with a curry mustard dip; and fish and chips ($13.90).

Just want some light bites to go with craft beer and cider? Order a combination of three snacks for $27 nett. Options include crispy baby squid ($11); OBG crab cake ($11) with mango relish; and vongole bianco ($13), clams sauteed in white wine and served with toast.

5. KARAFURU DESSERTS

Picture-perfect eclairs are taking the pastry scene by storm and two-week-old Japanese-inspired dessert cafe Karafuru Desserts is one of the latest to dish out these dainty delights.

Eclair (priced between $6 and $7) flavours include jasmine matcha; sakura rose; umeshiso; ichigo yogurt, with yogurt creme, strawberries, raspberries and pistachio sables; and Irish cream, with coffee whisky creme, mascarpone chantilly and toasted almonds. Online orders for the eclairs will start next month.

The menu also features Japanese-style parfait. Options include Hanami (photo 5), with sakura souffle, vanilla pudding, strawberries and raspberries; Yuzu Cha, with yuzu souffle, mango pudding, bergamot curd and candied lemon peel; and Pancakes,  with pancake souffle, banana pudding, madeleines and maple syrup. Each parfait costs $16.
