Local singer Tay Kewei, 31, will be tying the knot with her long-time beau, athletics coach Alfred Sim, 33, on Jan 4.

Although they have been dating for 10 years, their relationship came to light only when Sim took part and won the latest season of local reality TV singing contest Project Superstar in October.

"He's very sweet, although he doesn't look it. I never thought I would have a boyfriend like him. I'm not into hot bods," Tay tells Life! with a chuckle over the telephone. News of the upcoming nuptials was released by her record label S2S today.

The couple met in 2004 when they were guest singers at the solo EP launch of local singer Peter Huang, who is also part of a cappella group MICappella. They bonded over their common interest in music and soon started dating.

Part-time wedding singer Sim planned an elaborate proposal in May by having Tay take on an engagement to perform at a wedding.

"When I turned up at the restaurant, there was no wedding couple. There were about 40 of our friends and family members there. It was a good surprise", says Tay, who has three albums under her belt, including Mandopop offering Turn Back & Smile, released in September.

The surprise did not end there. The next morning, Tay was whisked away to Tokyo for a week-long trip to take their pre-wedding photos.

She says: "We took the 5am flight to Japan. I've always dreamt of being surprised like that. I was so happy. He thought that it would be very anticlimactic if we went back to our normal lives after the proposal."

The musical couple will be commemorating their marriage in a fitting way - by commissioning an original song.

Tay says: "Alfred and I will be writing the lyrics. It's going to be our first original song, it will be ours, it will be very meaningful."

It is unlikely that guests at their wedding ceremony will get to hear the couple sing live though.

Tay says in mock protest: "We were under a lot of pressure to sing but we don't want to sing at our own wedding. We were thinking of recording the duet and playing it at the wedding."
