Hundreds of songs have been written about fathers and fatherhood, but some of them speak closer to the heart than most.

With today being Father's Day, The Straits Times collects some of the greatest songs about fatherhood.

The Game - Like Father, Like Son

For even the biggest 'tough guys' out there, fatherhood can be an exhilarating yet terrifying experience. And so it was, too, for US rapper The Game, who recounts the birth of his son. Busta Rhymes contributes the chorus of the song too.

"But in the end I hope you only turn out better than me
I hope you know I love you young'n, like Father, like Son"

Jay Z - Glory

While The Game sang about the (mild) panic and excitement that comes with being a new dad, Jay-Z sings - or raps, rather - praises about his "beautiful-est" daughter Blue Ivy. While not entirely grammatically correct, you can't deny that Jay-Z's love for his daughter shines through.

John Mayer - Daughters

John Mayer is no stranger to girls. The notorious Lothario has had his fair share of relationships over the years, so the Grammy-winning Daughters - about how important it is for men to "be good" to their daughters - shows a different side of the singer.

For those who want to reconnect

Bruce Springsteen - My Father's House

No relationship is ever smooth-sailing. It was no different for Bruce Springsteen, who's spoken about the difficult relationship he had with his own father. My Father's House sees The Boss sing about coming to terms with the rocky relationship and moving on.

Queen - Father To Son

Father To Son, from Queen's second album, may be the most epic song on this list. Despite that, it's about a more down-to-earth topic - that of a father trying to give advice to his son, even though he doesn't want to listen.

For the dads whose kids are growing up

Ben Folds Five, "Still Fighting It"

"And you're so much like me / I'm sorry."

Possibly the greatest line ever written about being a father. Still Fighting It is about how growing up is hard to do - for both children and their parents. Ben Folds sings about the bittersweet experience of his son growing up, and worrying about how he'll turn out.

Butterfly Kisses - Bob Carlisle

Sort of a counterpoint to John Mayer's Daughters, Bob Carlisle's hit is all about growing up from the father's perspective. If you grew up during the 90s, you'll probably remember this sappy hit being played ad nauseum on the radio. But given the benefit of a couple of decades' life experiences, this song takes on a whole new meaning.

Bread - Everything I Own

'You sheltered me from harm, kept me warm, gave my life to me, set me free.' Dating back to 1972, Bread frontman David Gates sings about the father who gave him everything, and how he'd give it all back just to have him back again. Treasure your dads while you can.

Eric Clapton - My Father's Eyes

My Father's Eyes draws parallels between the death of Clapton's son at the age of 4, and how he had never met his own father. As Clapton himself puts it: "I never met my father. And I realised that the closest I ever came to looking into my father's eyes was when I looked into my son's eyes."

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Someday Never Comes

The importance of a father in their childrens' lives is perhaps best underlined by Someday Never Comes. John Fogerty's parents went through a divorce when he was young, and he was told that someday, he'd understand. But that "Someday" never came, and Fogerty never got to understand. Fast forward through adulthood, and Fogerty was going through his own divorce, as his own son was left to wonder why.
