Barry Manilow's surprise wedding: Five other celebrity gay marriages

Singer-songwriter Barry Manilow, 71, is such a private man that his secret wedding last year to his longtime manager Garry Kief, 66, was not revealed till Wednesday.

The National Enquirer and People magazine quoted sources as saying they wed in a ceremony at their Palm Springs, California, mansion.

The singer is among many gay stars who have tied the knot. Here are a few.

Elton John and David Furnish

They held a star-studded wedding in December last year at their estate in Windsor, west of London, after being a pair for 21 years.

British pop legend John, 68, and Furnish, a Canadian film-maker aged 52, had entered a civil partnership in 2005. Their wedding was held 11 days after it became legal to convert such partnerships into marriages.

They have two sons Zachary, four, and Elijah, two, both born via surrogacy.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

The comedienne married Hollywood actress de Rossi in California in August 2008, at a time when same-sex marriage licences were being issued. Degeneres, 57, and de Rossi, 42, held an intimate ceremony with friends and family. A Los Angeles court later allowed de Rossi to change her name to Portia Lee James DeGeneres.

Jodie Foster and Alexandra Hedison

The actress wed the American photographer in April last year after dating for almost a year. Hedison, 45, dated DeGeneres for three years before they split up in 2004 when DeGeneres began dating de Rossi. Foster, 52, first acknowledged publicly that she is gay when she referred in 2013 to her "ex-partner in love" and "most beloved BFF of 20 years" movie producer Cydney Bernard, with whom she has two sons Charles, 16, and Christopher, 13. She was then speaking at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards. They broke up in 2008.

Tom Ford and Richard Buckley

The fashion designer was 25 years old when he met Buckley, 66, and they have been together since. In April last year, Ford, 53, casually broke the news of their marriage in his appearance at the Regent Street Apple store in London.

"Richard, yes, 27 years, and we're now married, which is nice," he said, adding they wed in the United States. He later said they married because he did not want their son to be illegitimate. Alexander John Buckley Ford, aged two, is believed to have been born via a surrogate.

Buckley is the former editor-in-chief of Vogue Hommes International.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka

The How I Met Your Mother star wed Burtka, an American theatre actor, in a castle in Perugia, Italy, last September, after 10 years and two children together. Elton John performed at the reception.

When New York legalised gay marriage in 2011, Harris said he had been engaged for more than five years and was "waiting for an available date".

Harris, 41, and Burtka, 39, are parents of four-year-old twins Harper Grace and Gideon Scott.
