Kuala Lumpur - Veteran actor Datuk Abdul Aziz Sattar, who became a household name after acting in the popular Bujang Lapok films, died at the Kajang Hospital around 2am on Tuesday.

He was 89.

"My father was hospitalised since Sunday after a heart attack," his daughter, Sandakiah, told Malaysia's Berita Harian when asked to confirm about his death.

Aziz was sent to the hospital after complaining of chest pains and collapsed in the home of one his children, reported entertainment website Astro Gempak.

He was treated at the hospital's coronary care unit and his condition had reportedly stabilised.

Together with the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee and S. Shamsuddin, Aziz was part of the trio in Pendekar Bujang Lapok (1959), Ali Baba Bujang Lapok (1960) and Seniman Bujang Lapok (1961), which have a huge following among the young and old until now.

Veteran Singaporean lyricist Yusnor Ef says that Aziz was natural comic in both reel and real life.

"He would ad lib his script and make up his lines on the spot and a lot of his dialogue are remembered by fans of classic Malay comedy. He was always funny in real life too, but as a director, he took his work seriously, he didn't take things lightly," says the 77-year-old president of Perkamus, the Association of Malay Singers, Composers and Professional Musicians.

Yusnor wrote the the lyrics for songs in the comedies Prebet Lapok (1979) and Da Di Du (1981), which were directed by Aziz, and also wrote the script for action drama Serampang Tiga (1981), which was produced by Aziz's company, Indra Filem Productions.

Born on Aug 8, 1925, in Pekalongan, Central Java, Aziz joined the Pancasitara band whose members included Ramlee, Normadiah, Aziz Jaafar, Ahmad C and Kassim Masdor in the early 1950s.

Aziz also directed several films, including Keluarga Si Comat (1975), Si Badol (1979), Prebet Lapok (1979), Penyamun Tarbus (1980), Da Di Du (1981), Setinggan (1982) and Darah Satria (1993).

He was conferred datukship in 2007 by then Malaysian King, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin.

Aziz was married four times and had seven children.

On Dec 16, 2006, he married for the fifth time to Hashimah Delan.

He was scheduled to be buried in a Muslim cemetery in Cheras.

Family members and relatives, including those from Johor and Singapore, were expected to arrive on Tuesday morning for the burial.
