LOS ANGELES, United States (AFP) - Raunchy comedy Neighbors vaulted to top spot at the North American box office in its debut weekend, relegating The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to second place, industry data showed on Monday.
Starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne as new parents who find themselves living next door to a raucous fraternity, Universal Pictures' Neighbors raked in US$49 million (S$61.3 million) from Friday to Sunday, according to tracker Exhibitor Relations.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the sequel featuring Andrew Garfield, settled for second, taking in US$35.5 million for a total US$146.2 million in the two weeks since release.
In a distant third was The Other Woman, the romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz, which had ticket sales of US$9.6 million in its third week at movie theaters.
In fourth place was "Heaven Is for Real," starring Greg Kinnear as the father of a four-year-old boy who wakes up from emergency surgery with a story about going to heaven and back. It pulled in US$7.5 million as it slipped down the charts.
Fifth was Captain America: The Winter Soldier, based on the iconic Marvel superhero and starring Chris Evans, with US$5.8 million. It has earnings of over US$245 million since release.
Next up was animated flick Rio 2, about a family of blue Macaw parrots with voices by Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway. It registered sales of US$5 million.
Seventh was PG-rated comedy Moms' Night Out, pulling in US$4.3 million on its first weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 was another newcomer, Legends of Oz (US$3.7 million), followed by Divergent (US$1.7 million) and Brick Mansions (US$1.6 million).
