NEW YORK (AFP) - The lavish 19th century New York apartment overlooking Central Park where Hollywood siren Lauren Bacall lived for more than 50 years is on the market for a whopping US$26 million (S$33 million).

The grand, nine-room apartment in the Dakota building, which dates back to 1884, boasts three bedrooms, a library, great room, dining room and breathtaking tree-top views across Central Park.

The property has been listed by Warburg Realty as a "rare and iconic treasure" and a "true once in a life-time opportunity."

Bacall, one of Hollywood's great golden age actresses famed for her on-screen and real-life romance with husband Humphrey Bogart, lived in the apartment from the 1960s until her death in August.

Listing photographs show that Bacall, who was 89 when she died, kept the apartment's period features such as fireplaces, mahogony doors and hard-wood flooring in stunning condition.

It boasts 4m-high ceilings, 31/2 bathrooms, walk-in closets, a butler's pantry, laundry room and eat-in kitchen.

The Dakota, one of the most venerable apartment buildings in New York, has been home to a number of stars, including former Beatle John Lennon in the 1970s, and was the site of his murder in 1980.

Bacall captivated Hollywood for decades starting with her breakthrough role at age 19 in To Have And Have Not opposite the 45-year-old Bogart, whom she married the following year.

She went on to star with Bogart in The Big Sleep in 1946, Dark Passage in 1947 and Key Largo in 1948. She also appeared in films opposite John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe.

Bacall moved to New York after Bogart died in 1957 and lived in the Dakota apartment with second husband Jason Robards.

She continued to live there, through the end of her life, following their divorce in 1969.
