Fashion wins and fails on the second day of the Cannes Film Festival

Australian actress Cate Blanchett is gorgeous as always in a dainty gray metallic Valentino. But it is the quirky Chopard earrings that add an unexpected touch of fun - they are in the shape of prawns. -- PHOTO: AFP

There's fashion disasters, then there is the inexplicable. That about sums up Russian television presenter Elena Lenina's baffling accessories which she seems to have stolen from an oversized Christmas tree. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
Actress Blake Lively has been quite the fashion plate this past couple of weeks. This sparkling Chanel dress accented her cleavage and showed off her tiny waist with a corset detailing. The silk kimono she wore in a shawl drape was rather unnecessary though. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
Oh dear. We don't know what is worse: The leather top that looks mumsy despite the edgy material, or the weird spiral embroidery satin skirt in this disaster of a customised Louis Vuitton dress. Which is a pity because from the neck up, actress Julianne Moore looks gorgeous with the simple bob and lightly smokey eyes. -- PHOTO: EPA
Trust a French woman to pull off the seemingly impossible combination of casual chic and red carpet glitz. Designer Ines de la Fressange does it with a sleek silver column of a dress, accessorised by gold beaded slippers and bangles, and a bright aqua shawl for a splash of colour. -- PHOTO: EPA
Actress Zoe Saldana goes green in a black Jason Wu gown embellished with green embroidery. From the front it looks like a rather dull dress, but there is actually a daring cutout detail on the back. -- PHOTO: AFP

The serious films got underway at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival after the fluffy Grace Of Monaco opening.

The next film to offer red carpet moments was Mike Leigh's Mr Turner, a biopic about legendary British landscape painter J.M.W. Turner, starring Timothy Spall (better known as the snivelling Wormtail from the Harry Potter franchise) in the title role.

Here are some of the choicest fashion wins and fails on Day Two.
