BEIJING - The arrest of Chinese actor Wang Xuebing for suspected drug offences has cast uncertainties over the release of a film he stars in, a report said.

Wang, whose film A Fool won awards at the Golden Horse Awards last year, was caught by police together with a female magazine art director on Tuesday, according to reports.

Wang, 43, was an anti-drug ambassador for Beijing in 2006.

The Beijing Evening News and other media said he was held on suspicion of using crystal methamphetamine.

A Fool, scheduled to open on the Chinese mainland on May 1, may now be forced to change its opening day, reported Xinhua.

China's media watchdog bans stars who have used drugs or visited prostitutes from TV and movie screens.

The movie's producers released a statement, saying they would meet with the film's director Chen Jianbin to solve the problem, according to Xinhua.

"A movie is not only the work of one man, but also consists of teamwork," said the statement.

Wang is the latest celebrity in China in recent times to be held over drugs. Jaycee Chan, son of action star Jackie Chan, was released last month from jail for providing a venue for people to use drugs in Beijing last year.

Wang portrayed a murderer in Black Coal, Thin Ice, which last year won the Golden Bear - the top prize - at the Berlin film festival.

He was nominated for a Golden Horse Best Supporting award last year for his performance in A Fool.

The movie clinched a Best Actor award and a Best New Director prize for Chen at the 2014 awards ceremony.

Chen also stars in the movie about a Chinese farmer who helps a homeless man only to be accused of human trafficking.
