2014 Met Gala: Hollywood's best- and worst-dressed stars

HOT OR NOT: Actress Anna Kendrick's polished up-do very well complemented the stunning black-and-white gown by J. Mendel. The gown's geometric front showed just enough skin to stun admirers. Something better could have been done with the gown's back
HOT OR NOT: Actress Anna Kendrick's polished up-do very well complemented the stunning black-and-white gown by J. Mendel. The gown's geometric front showed just enough skin to stun admirers. Something better could have been done with the gown's back part though, as it looked like an inverted bra. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Dancer and model Dita Von Teese was classy as ever in a Zac Posen gown. The red hemline of her mermaid gown made it look like she was just floating effortlessly on the red carpet. Lovely, as always. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: It could take a lot or very little to pull off a red dress on the red carpet. Anne Hathaway did so by baring just tiny slivers of skin in a red Calvin Klein gown. -- -- PHOTO: AFP
HOT OR NOT: Hayden Panettiere arrived at the 2014 Met Gala in a Dennis Basso gown. The dress looked rather simple and boring from afar, but carried details of what looked like a huge flower up close. Panettiere brightened up the ensemble with her wide smile. -- PHOTO: AFP
HOT OR NOT: Actress Kate Bosworth was a picture of elegance in her Stella McCartney gown at the 2014 Met Gala. Do not be fooled by the seemingly sexy front as she showed a lot of skin when she turned her back. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: This Marchesa gown looked Disney-inspired, but it seemed like Katie Holmes forgot to tell her fairy godmother that she was going to a ball. Either that, or a wicked witch messed up her ensemble just before she reached the castle - or in this case, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Feathers. Tulle. Sequins. Can you believe this is a Chanel on Kristen Stewart? Some have called the dress "edgy". Some might refer to it as a mess of textures and elements. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Look, a floating head with shoulders and arms! Oh, it was actress Lake Bell in a red Tommy Hilfiger gown on the red carpet. She made her pregnancy public on April 23, but the red-on-red photo did not seem to work well for her to show off her baby bump. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Shining and shimmering actress Lea Michele in a gold Altuzarra gown. Too golden and a bit too tacky. And what was with that extra cloth on her mid-section? -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Model Liu Wen arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala Benefit in a satin Zac Posen gown. The top was nicely shaped but the voluminous skirt looked like there was a giant spider underneath whose legs were trying to keep the skirt in place. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: With a simple Diane Von Furstenberg gown, simple hair and simple make-up, actress Olivia Munn managed to stun on the red carpet by showing off some skin and flashing a pretty smile. -- PHOTO: AFP
HOT OR NOT: Rachel McAdams' Ralph Lauren gown showed that you do not need too many details, very bright colours and very complicated cuts to stun on the red carpet. Very classy. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Reese Witherspoon stood out on the red carpet with her hot pink Stella McCartney gown that was perfectly complemented by her wavy locks. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Singer Rihanna was all glammed up in her all-white, midriff-showing and back-baring Stella McCartney dress. The up-do completed the classy look. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Singer Taylor Swift was pretty in pink at the 2014 Met Gala. On her, the Oscar de la Renta gown did not scream Oscar de la Renta. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: For some reason, Sarah Jessica Parker felt the need to let the world know she was wearing an Oscar de la Renta gown. The designer's signature was very visible on the train of her dress at the 2014 Met Gala. Do you approve? -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Actress and singer Selena Gomez looked all grown up in a simple yet elegantly cut Diane von Furstenberg gown. -- PHOTO: REUTERS
HOT OR NOT: Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o's 2014 Met Gala gown was far from the classic cuts we usually see her in on the red carpet. This Prada dress - feathers, gems and all - received mixed reviews from the fashion community. -- PHOTO: REUTERS

After a punk rock affair in 2013, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala focused on Charles James - America's first couturier - for its theme this year.

James is a British-born designer who entered the fashion industry with a hat shop in Chicago when he was 19, according to EOnline. He later brought his designs to New York.

The designer is known for his structural designs, which would explain why many guests at this year's Met Gala arrived in gowns of different geometric accents. He is also known for volume and weight - his most popular ball gown was said to have weighed over 8kg - so there's also a lot of big and bold designs at the ball.

Check out what the stars wore at this year's Met Gala and feel free to judge the ensembles on the red carpet.
