SINGAPORE - They don't have the usual angels, snowflakes or holly, but two unusual Christmas trees have caught the eyes of Straits Times readers, and won their votes.

Forty-eight per cent of Straits Times readers who responded to an online poll on their favourite Christmas tree chose the Doraemon Tree at One Raffles Place as their choice.

The tree, which is made up of hundreds of bright blue robot cats, or Doraemon figurines, won with 529 votes.

"We are thrilled to have our Christmas tree ranked as the favourite Christmas tree in a shopping mall, and hope that the Doraemon Christmas tree has brought much joy and festive cheer to shoppers and visitors in the business district as it has to us," said Ms Ng Lay Pheng, general manager of OUB Centre Limited.

The unusual Rebel's Christmas tree at orchardgateway came second with 132 or 12.39 per cent of the votes.

The mall's flagrantly modern "tree" is made up of colourful figures sitting and standing on a trio of neon-lit cubes.

The two winners stood out from the traditional trees at other malls.

The tree at Paragon, themed Christmas Magic, is adorned with fairy lights, reindeer and ribbons, and came third with 6.62 per cent of readers' votes.

Christmas in Wonderland at Tanglin Mall, Candy Wonderland at ION Orchard and the four-storey tall Christmas tree at Takashimaya also got about 6 per cent of the votes each.

A total of 1,096 readers voted for 11 trees in the online poll which ran from Dec 2 to 21.
