Ip Man 3 is better than Star Wars

I refer to your article, Ip Man Beats Star Wars In Singapore (The Straits Times, Dec 29), about how the Hong Kong martial arts film overtook the box-office takings of Star Wars: The Force Awakens over the Christmas weekend.

John Lui, in his pop culture column (Filmgoers Down With Universe Fatigue, Jan 6), thinks that it is because filmgoers are sick of movie universes and want something more straightforward and without baggage.

I disagree. I think Ip Man 3 beat The Force Awakens because it is a better film.I have watched both movies numerous times in the cinemas. During The Force Awakens, audiences used phones and visited the washroom. During Ip Man 3, people were glued to the screen.

Ip Man makes viewers laugh and cry. It teaches us moral values and lessons about kinship.

Even if it were up against another movie with no relation to some shared universe, it will triumph simply because it is a great movie.
