In 1970, after six years in London, I returned to Singapore with my mother. I was 10 years old and thrust into the tail end of Primary 4 at St Andrews School in Potong Pasir where I made many new friends, including Peter, the son of guitar maestro Alex Abisheganaden; Guy, the son of Reddifusion DJ Mike Ellery; and Ram Singh. The four of us became the best of friends and with five others made up the nine members of the Malay second language class.
We were so relieved not to be in the Chinese class as the teacher there was quite fierce and wielded a big swishy cane that he used daily.
