Hannah John-Kamen, who plays a bounty hunter in Killjoys, does her own stunts in stilettos

Hannah John-Kamen says she is not just another pretty face filling in a token hot babe role in the new science-fiction TV drama Killjoys.

The 25-year-old British actress lives and breathes all things science fiction.

"I grew up with a brother obsessed with Star Wars, so there were tons of Star Wars stuff for me growing up. I also absolutely loved Stanley Kubrick's 2001: Space Odyssey.

"I am also a massive, massive, massive graphic novel fan. I collect graphic novels such as Suicide Squad. I just love to escape into fantasy really, so it's an absolute honour to be part of a sci-fi show right now," she says in a recent telephone interview with Life.

In her new show, she plays sexy femme fatale Dutch, one of the titular "Killjoys" - a group of trained bounty hunters who chase fugitives across a distant planetary system.

The stunt training and the military training - all of it was just so awesome and cool. It really makes you feel so bada**.

Dutch is the leader of a trio, which includes two men, played by Aaron Ashmore (Smallville, 2006 - 2011) and Luke Macfarlane (Brothers & Sisters, 2006 - 2011).

"In this world, Dutch is an extremely tough cookie. I definitely love that she is such a strong female character.

"I read the script, did the screen test in Toronto and just fell in love with the character immediately," says John-Kamen, who had played bit parts in TV shows such as crime dramas Whitechapel (2012) and Happy Valley (2014), before Killjoys came along.

It is perhaps no surprise that the central role in Killjoys would be a strong woman.

Killjoys is produced by the makers of Orphan Black, an acclaimed sci-fi series that has made a star out of its lead, Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany, who plays a female con artist coming to grips with the fact that she is one of many clones.

Moreover, Killjoys was created by Michelle Lovretta, who previously created Lost Girl (2010 - 2015), a supernatural drama centered on a powerful succubus who grew up in a normal human family.

Says John-Kamen: "I was very familiar with Lost Girl, which was about a wonderful strong female. It's inspiring and I was a big fan of that, so it's great to be part of this now."

She also enjoyed performing plenty of her own stunts in the show.

"I might have enjoyed the action stuff a bit too much. Everyone else was like, 'Hannah, I can tell you're really loving this,'" she says.

"The stunt training and the military training - all of it was just so awesome and cool. It really makes you feel so bada**."

Even better, the beauty of Nigerian and Norwegian descent can do it all in stilettos.

"There's one scene where the floor was really slippery and we had to keep drying the floor because I was wearing heels.

"But honestly, when you've gone over the moves so many times, you can do it in anything.

"So I can do it all in a dress and in heels. And that actually makes the role that much sexier, which I love."

• Killjoys premieres tomorrow on AXN (StarHub TV Channel 511) at 9.45pm.
