Contemporary New York eatery Eleven Madison Park was crowned the world's best restaurant of 2017 at a glitzy ceremony in Melbourne yesterday, edging out last year's winner, Italy's Osteria Francescana.

Singapore's Restaurant Andre in Bukit Pasoh Road, meanwhile, leapt 18 spots to No. 14.

It is the only restaurant from the Republic on the top 50 list.

The 51 to 100 list, released last week, featured two Singapore entries - French fine-dining restaurant Odette at the National Gallery Singapore debuting at No. 86, and Burnt Ends in Teck Lim Road at No. 53.

Eleven Madison Park took the crown seven years after it debuted on the list.

The restaurant - run by chef Daniel Humm and restaurateur Will Guidara - broke into the top five in 2013, and was third last year on the list, put out by United Kingdom-based publisher William Reed Business Media.

Last year's No. 1 restaurant - Italian chef-restaurateur Massimo Bottura's Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy - slipped to second place.

Rounding up the top five were El Celler de Can Roca in Spain at third place, Mirazur in France at fourth spot, and Peru's Central in fifth.

Central's chef Virgilio Martinez also received the Chef's Choice award at the awards ceremony in Melbourne on April 5.

Missing from the list was Denmark's Noma - previously ranked No. 5. It was excluded because it is currently closed pending relocation.

The top restaurant in Asia went to Thailand's Gaggan - currently top of the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list. On the world list, it moved up 16 spots to No. 7.

Exiting the top 10 was Narisawa from Tokyo, Japan, which slid 10 spots to No. 18.

Other restaurants from the Asia's 50 Best list included Hong Kong's Amber (No. 24), Thailand's Nahm (No. 28), and China's Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet (No. 41).

This year, The World's 50 Best Restaurants Academy was expanded to include 1,040 voters worldwide, increasing the number of overall voters by 52 per cent.

Each member casts 10 votes for their best restaurants - up from seven votes last year. Of the 10, at least four must be for restaurants outside the voter's home region.
