Singapore - Jaan's chef de cuisine Kirk Westaway, 30, has won the Rising Chef of the Year award at the annual World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence on April 5.

This comes just nine months after he took over the reins at fine dining restaurant Jaan at Swissotel The Stamford, after chef Julien Royer left to open Odette restaurant at the National Gallery Singapore.

On the win, chef Westaway says: "Chef Julien has won this award before me and now I'm filling his shoes. It is massive pressure but I've given it all that I can. My team and I are constantly pushing new boundaries and we are going from strength to strength."

Other accolades went to Restaurant Andre's Andre Chiang for his third Chef of the Year award, and Joel Robuchon Restaurant at Resorts World Sentosa for Restaurant of the Year.

This is the 16th year of the awards ceremony and the 20th anniversary of the World Gourmet Summit, which is a festival of food and wine events. This year, the festival started on March 28 and ends April 24.

It is organised by A La Carte Productions, a division of food consultancy Peter Knipp Holdings, and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).
