Food Picks: Food Anatomy's cute cubes, burgers at The Lab, Majestic's last day, and wonton mee in Telok Blangah



Food Anatomy serves adorable and eye-catching food cubes (above).

Dishes - ranging from beef rendang with rice to lasagna to chicken rice - are cut into perfect cubes, about 7 by 7cm. There are more than 10 variations.

I was first attracted to them because they were cute and colourful. But the three (promotional price of $5.80 for three pieces or $2.90 for one) I tried were delicious.

The tri-coloured beef rendang cube is my favourite. A layer of yellow nasi kunyit is topped with white rice and finished with aromatic and tender beef rendang.

The nasi lemak is worth a mention too. An omelette square is sandwiched between fragrant layers of white and green coconut rice, topped with a piece of otah and a small dollop of sambal and ikan bilis.

The cubes are great for parties and meetings and as tea-time snacks. Plus, you can have a little variety in your meal.

Recently, I was reminded of a wonton mee stall I have not patronised in a number of years.

When I popped in at Hong Ji Mian Shi Jia at Telok Blangah Drive Food Centre last weekend, the queue was long. But the wonton mee (above, from $3) was satisfying.

A generous amount of savoury chilli mixed with a light soya sauce gravy coats every strand of springy noodles. The char siew is nothing to shout about, but the dumplings are decently plump.

Today is the last day that Majestic Restaurant will operate at its current, original location at the New Majestic Hotel in Bukit Pasoh Road. It opened, along with the hotel, in 2006. The hotel will turn into a private members' club next year.

The restaurant is still as charming as ever - I love the intimacy of the space and the skylight that shines through portholes in the pool above.

The food, too, is stunning. The restaurant is headed by award- winning chef Yong Bing Ngen who, from the look on his face earlier this week, is a little emotional about having to say goodbye to this space.

His restaurant's new premises will be ready later this year, located at The Heart at Marina One, near Marina Bay Financial Centre and Asia Square.

Must-order dishes include the Peking duck ($39 for half, $78 whole). It comes with light, soft and savoury housemade pancakes with just the right amount of body.

The supple meat can then be prepared in a variety of ways, including sliced and simmered in sauce.

I also love chef Yong's smooth and wobbly housemade beancurd, served chilled with an elegant and umami century egg sauce, crabmeat and ikura ($14); and his signature stewed Boston lobster noodles (above, $68, or $34 for an individual portion) in a sauce so robust that you will want to slurp up every drop.

Until the new restaurant opens, chef Yong will be spending more time at his other two restaurants - Majestic Bay Seafood at Gardens by the Bay and Jing restaurant at One Fullerton.

This hip Muslim-owned cafe-restaurant in Kampong Glam has an extensive menu with hearty offerings - everything from burgers and sandwiches to pizzas and interesting dishes such as salted egg yolk pasta with smoked duck.

If you are planning to dine here, you must order a burger ($13 to $17 each). There are seven to choose from.

I recommend the Heisenberger ($17, above) with the works - juicy beef patty with caramelised onion, tomato coulis, blue cheese aioli and crispy turkey bacon. Delish.

The menu is revamped every six months and there are also monthly specials, so you never quite feel like you are eating the same things.

For the month of Ramadan, it will offer set menus priced from $30 a person and special a la carte items.
