Unique versions have popped up, from ayam buah keluak patties to buns made of Mac & Cheese. SundayLife! checks them out

NASI LEMAK BURGER

Where: Artistry, 17 Jalan Pinang, open: 10am to 11.45pm (Tuesday to Saturday), 10am to 7pm (Sunday)

Info: Call 6298-2420 or go to www.facebook.com/artistryspace?ref=br_tf

What: Cafe-cum-art gallery Artistry's take on nasi lemak burger ($15) comes with grilled boneless chicken thigh marinated in a spice paste with blue ginger, lemongrass, turmeric and chilli peppers. It is topped with an egg done sunny side up, crispy anchovies, toasted peanuts and cucumber. Instead of rice patties featured in nasi lemak burgers done by other cafes, Artistry's concoction is served with pandan coconut buns and a side of sambal chilli.

CHOCOLATE BURGER

Where: FOC Restaurant, 40 Hongkong Street, open: noon to 2.30pm, 6 to 11pm, Monday to Saturday, closed on Sunday

Info: Call 6100-4040 or go to https://www.facebook.com/FOCRestaurant

What: End your meal on a sweet note at the two-month-old Spanish restaurant with its chocolate burger ($12). The “buns” are made with vanilla ice cream coated in white chocolate, while the patty is made with chocolate mousse. For the cheese, head chef Jordi Noguera uses mango while strawberry takes the place of tomatoes. Finally, mint leaves are added in lieu of lettuce.

BUAH KELUAK BURGER

Where: Hambaobao, Beauty World Centre, Block 144 Upper Bukit Timah Road, 04-49, open: Noon to 8pm, Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Monday

Info: www.facebook.com/hambaobaosg

What: The two-month-old burger stall puts a twist on the traditional Peranakan dish of ayam buah keluak, a chicken stew with black nuts. The burger’s ($5) patty consists of minced chicken, buah keluak and homemade rempah (spice paste), and is topped with chap chye or Nonya vegetable stew.

MAC & CHEESE BURGER

Where: The Beast, 17 Jalan Klapa, open: 5pm to midnight (Monday to Thursday), 5pm to 1am (Friday and Saturday), 10am to 5pm (Sunday)

Info: Call 6295-0017 or go to www.facebook.com/thesgbeast

What: Southern comfort food macaroni and cheese gets transformed into the buns for a burger ($22, available only during Sunday brunch) with a beef patty, bacon jam and barbecue sauce. Served with a side of sweet potato fries.

TOFU BURGER

Where: Bodacious Bar & Bistro, 70 Biopolis Street, open: 10am to 10pm (weekday), 9am to 6pm (Sunday), closed on Saturday

Info: Call 6778-9585 or go to www.facebook.com/bodaciousbistro

What: Here is one for the vegetarians. The Hungry Man Tofu Burger ($12.80) features a patty made with cuminspiced tofu which is coated with breadcrumbs. It is topped with peach chutney and comes with a side salad. Other outlets that sell versions of vegetarian burgers include ingredients such as eggplant and mushrooms.

CHILLI CRAB CROQUE

Where: Southbridge, 80 Boat Quay, Level 5, open: 5pm to midnight, Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Monday

Info: Call 6536-5818 or go to www.facebook.com/southbridgebar

What: From oyster bar Southbridge’s selection of sandwiches and sliders, try the chilli crab croque ($18), a spin on the French croque monsieur. A non-messy version of chilli crab, a local favourite dish, it features homemade bread topped with a hearty serving of chilli crab meat and cheese. Royal Plaza On Scotts’ Asian-inspired tapas restaurant A.T.O.S. also features chilli crab ($14) on the menu which is sandwiched between fried mantou.

CHICKEN SATAY BURGER

Where: I Am, 674 North Bridge Road, open: 11.30am to 11pm (Monday to Thursday), 11.30 to 1am (Friday and Saturday), 11.30am to 10pm (Sunday)

Info: Call 6295-5509 or go to www.facebook.com/Iamathajilane

What: This Amsterdam-inspired cafe offers a satay burger as satay is a popular dish in the Dutch capital, influenced by the Dutch colonisation of Indonesia. The burger ($12.90) features bite-sized chicken chunks instead of a whole burger patty – to stay true to the origin of skewered meats – and a peanut-based sauce.

RAMEN BURGER

Where: Little Hiro, King’s Arcade, 559 Bukit Timah Road, 01-01, open: 11.30am to 9.30pm (Sunday to Thursday), 11.30am to 10pm (Friday and Saturday)

Info: Call 6466-3477 or go to www.facebook.com/littlehirobbq

What: The ramen buns at Little Hiro are cooked in a homemade shio stock before they are air-dried and mixed with egg and spices. The buns are then shaped and finished on the grill so that they are crisp outside and moist inside. The two flavours are BBQ Bacon Bleu ($11.90, right) and Fried Chicken Karaage ($9.90). Ramen burgers can also be found at casual eatery Mian by The Travelling C.O.W. (Chef On Wheels) at Block 119 Bukit Merah Lane 1, 01-40.
