DO.MAIN BAKERY IN TANJONG KATONG

Those who live in the East Coast often wax lyrical about the abundance of good food in the area. As someone who lives in the west, I've always been a little jealous about the food in the east. And now foodies there have yet another reason to sing praises about their side of the island. Do.Main, a 2 1/2-month-old bakery-restaurant in Tanjong Katong Road, is a true gem. The viennoiserie, bread and other pastries are artisanal and made on-site in small batches. Things to eat here include the Manjari chocolate and salted caramel eclairs ($5 each), elegant choux pastries with plenty of panache; fine cream puffs ($5 each); and the bourdaloue or pear tart ($26 for a whole tart).

The bakery recently expanded its savoury menu, which now includes items such as delicious oven-baked escargots with garlic, herbs and tomato confit ($16); and a platter with house-made pork rillettes and duck terrine, and Kurobuta ham ($20).

Where: Do.Main Bakery, 226 Tanjong Katong Road MRT: Dakota Open: 8am - 9pm (Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday), 8am - 10.30pm (Friday and Saturday), closed on Monday Tel: 6348-1406 Info: www.do-mainbakery.com

ORANGETTES FROM PANTLER

There is something about dark chocolate and candied orange peel that hits the spot for me every single time. It perks me up when I'm down and heightens my mood when I'm happy. The pairing is a simple and winning combination of textures and flavours.

Patisserie Pantler in Telok Ayer Street offers a superb version of orangettes ($3.50 each). Each thin slice of candied orange is dipped in lush dark chocolate and every bite is a gorgeous, sensual experience.

These not only make for good gifts, but are also the perfect pick-me-ups for any time of day.

Where: Pantler, 198 Telok Ayer Street MRT: Telok Ayer or Tanjong Pagar Open: 9.30am - 7pm (weekday), 11am - 5pm (Saturday), closed on Sunday Tel: 6221-6223 Info: E-mail contact@pantler.com.sg or go to www.pantler.com.sg

7 KICKSTART

I like the vibe and feel of 7Kickstart, a cafe in Singapore Art Museum at the corner of Waterloo Street and Bras Basah Road.

It's a great place for breakfast, coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, but I enjoy it most at breakfast time.

There is a range of coffee beans and blends - try the Singapore Butter Espresso ($4) - as well as refreshing iced teas with appealing names such as Y.O.L.O, a blend of peppermint and ginger tea, and blood orange ($5).

For breakfast (from 8 to 11am), have a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon ($7.90); eggs on toast ($6.90); or a Veggie-Delight ($10.90, inset) with sauteed mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes and eggs as you like them, sprinkled with paprika and served with toasted focaccia. Other savoury dishes to be had during the day include burgers, fish and chips and toasties.

GULA MELAKA SCONES

A few things caught my eye when I was at And All Things Delicious, a bakery in Jalan Sultan, the other week. I had intended to pick up granola, but was distracted by the array of other baked treats, one of which was the Gula Melaka Scone ($3 each).

I cannot get enough of the sweet, sticky and rich molasses flavours of gula melaka in the scone - palm sugar is added to the scone dough. The extra gula melaka that is drizzled over the top of the each scone also makes for a decadent finish.

Be sure to warm it up before eating.
