No sweat, easy fun looks

Jogger pants leave the running track and take on fashion

Sweatpants, also known as jogger pants, have come a long way from the matching two-piece velour tracksuit made popular in the early 2000s by American fashion brand Juicy Couture.

Essentially pants with elastic waistbands and ribbed cuffs at the ankles, the updated versions come in a variety of materials, colours and designs to suit different styles.

While some styles have drawstrings at the waistband, others have a more dressy button closure that could work for a fun weekend outfit.

Here are tips on how to pull them off:

• To suit the hot weather in Singapore, choose a style made from light cotton or jersey, instead of the usual heavy-knit material.

•As jogger pants are seen as a casual fashion item, dress them up with more dressy separates such as shirts or heels.

• Socks that peek out from your shoes interfere visually with the cropped ankle cuffs of the pants and ruin the whole look. Go sockless or wear a pair of low-cut ankle socks.

• For a streamlined look, choose a cropped pair so that extra fabric does not bunch up sloppily around the ankles.

For women

LOOK 1: Cotton stretch jogger pants, $39.90 (usual price $49.90), from Uniqlo, high-neck embroidered folk top, $199, from H&M (available from Sept 8), and blue striped sneakers, $149.90, from Superga X Scotch & Soda. Wearing a more elaborate and dressy top balances out the casual feel of the jogger pants. The more frills or ruffles there are, the better.

LOOK 2: Cotton stretch jogger pants, $39.90 (usual price $49.90), from Uniqlo, pink knit sweater, $104.80, from iRoo, and denim Blaudell espadrille wedges, $240, from Castaner. Go for a casual feminine look with a slouchy knitted sweater and wedge sandals.

LOOK 1: Speckled jogging trousers, $59.90, from Zara, Sagan white cotton T-shirt with print, $250, from Christian Dada, and black Newton 8 eye boots, $219, from Dr Martens. A T-shirt and jogger pants combination might seem too casual, but a pair of edgy black boots will dress it up. Layer with a bomber jacket or long cardigan for a different feel.

LOOK 2: Speckled jogging trousers, $59.90, from Zara, white-and-blue striped shirt, $179, from future classics from Kapok at National Design Centre, and grey suede sneakers, $209, from Reigning Champ x New Balance (available only at Limited Edt Vault 313 from Saturday). Shirts instantly dress up jogger pants, but make sure they are tucked in for a neater look. The sneaker trend is still going strong and the shoes give this look the perfect sporty-casual vibe.
