Q&A

Gabriel Tan, 26, single, freelance fashion stylist

How would you describe your sense of style?

Street, urban and eclectic. I am also like a magpie - I like shiny things.

I wear mostly black outfits, while my accessories are colourful and shiny.

When did your interest in fashion start? It started when I was 15. I watched fashion reality series Project Runway and started noticing fashion-brand campaigns.

I then did costume design when I joined the theatre club in junior college.

Who are your favourite designers and what are your go-to brands?

I like London-based label KTZ for the prints and materials it uses, Colombian designer Haider Ackermann for his draping and American fashion designer Rick Owens for his avant-garde designs.

Who are your style icons?

I admire Guinness heiress Daphne Guinness for her wacky style. She can wear anything and still look amazing. I like how Australian photographer and influencer Margaret Zhang can combine different pieces to come up with a look that is uniquely hers. Also, Spanish television host Pelayo Diaz mixes high-street and high-fashion brands and looks effortlessly cool.

What are your favourite pieces in your wardrobe?

My matching blue camouflage shirt and short set (photo 1) from Thai label Dark, because it is practical in Singapore's hot weather.

I wear it when I have to run errands and still want to look stylish.

My black-and-white leather-look shoes (photo 2) from Hong Kong label 5cm, which is easy to match with my black-and-white aesthetic.

My black Fila canvas bag (photo 3), because it has many compartments and can be adjusted to fit more things.

I also like my KTZ shirt (photo 4) for its towel fabric detail. It was the first piece I bought from the label.

Lastly, my thrift-store necklace (photo 5) for the holographic effect of the stones. I like loud accessories.

Do you have any weaknesses when it comes to shopping?

Shoes. It can make or break an outfit.

You can wear the same clothes, but your look changes completely if you wear a different pair of shoes.

What is your favourite splurge piece?

My pair of MSGM shoes (photo 6).

I bought them from Tangs department store last year. They cost $300 after a 50 per cent discount.

I like the shine - they not only complement casual and semi-formal outfits, but they are also a conversation starter.

Is there a purchase you have regretted?

I do not have many big regrets as I try to match a potential buy to existing pieces in my wardrobe before making a purchase.

What is your most recent fashion purchase?

A blue tassel choker (photo 7) from Pop 04, a project label by Lasalle College of the Arts students. It cost $32 and I like it because I have not seen anything like it.

What is the best shopping or style advice you live by?

Don't doubt your taste.
