ON TREND

Let it shine

Look ready for a countdown party in an instant with a metallic outfit

If you are stressing out over what to wear for your New Year's Eve party tonight, go metallic.

It makes you look party-ready with minimal effort and has a nice sheen that catches the light as you move.

No wonder British It-girl Alexa Chung, model Gigi Hadid and Beyonce's cool younger sister, singer and actress Solange have all been spotted wearing metallics on the red carpet multiple times.

HOW TO WEAR IT

Pair your metallic piece with a top or bottom in the same colour, but in a different fabric - wearing metallic from top to toe can look too costume-like.

For a casual look, pair your metallic piece with neutrals such as white, black or grey separates.

The metallic look can look cheap if the material of your top or bottom is thin and wrinkles easily. Go for a thicker material or a more durable one such as leather.

To update your look in a flash, go for metallic accessories such as bags or shoes.

Here are The Straits Times' picks:

1. Metallic silver leather skirt by Kendall + Kylie at Topshop, $219, from Topshop

The high-waisted A-line silhouette of this skirt is right on trend.

2. Red double cross-body bag, $197, from Bimba Y Lola

Add a bold colour accent with this small cross-body bag.

3. Silver high heels with pointed toe, $199, from Aldo

Think of silver as a neutral colour like white - it goes easily with most colours.

4. Metallic jacquard 60s shift dress, $99.90, from Dorothy Perkins

This pretty pink and gold shift has a subtle snake print.

5. Matching top, $79, and skirt, $126, from Miss Selfridge

Mix and match these metallic separates with non-metallic pieces such as a pair of jeans or a white T-shirt.
