Jazz up the garment and spread some festive cheer

How do I style the Christmas sweater?

The Christmas sweater is that campy item everyone receives as a gift once in their lifetime.

But while the Christmas sweater - with its knitted patterns and clashing colours - is not a stylish addition to one's wardrobe, there is no better time than the festive season to wear it and get away with it. After all, what is the Christmas spirit if not for a little good cheer?

Here are tips on styling the Christmas sweater.

Go for shine: Glam up the sweater with sophisticated separates, preferably one that is sequinned or metallic. Women can go for a geek-chic look with a beret and a metallic pleated midi skirt.

For a cooler vibe, men can wear it with torn jeans and biker boots. Layer the look with a white T-shirt underneath and accessorise with a silver chain necklace.

Stand-out accessories: The sweater may draw a lot of attention, but it should not be the only talking point of your outfit. Instead, draw attention to a pair of statement earrings or an over-the-top clutch. Men can accessorise with a hat, cuff bracelet or an oversized watch.

Wear your best shoes: Pull your whole outfit together with sharp-looking shoes. For women, anything with heels is preferable, although pointy-toe flats work as well.

For men who prefer sneakers to dress shoes, go for a leather pair instead of a canvas one for a more luxurious feel.

The fit of the sweater: The sweater may be a joke, but its fit should be taken seriously. Its ideal length should hit about 2.5 to 5cm below your belly button - long enough to tuck into your waistband, but not too long that it looks untidy when untucked.
