How do I wear cropped trousers and what should I know when buying them?

Although they frequently reappear on the runways, cropped trousers can be tricky to style.

The question of fit, length and colour may boggle some minds. Further complicating things are the various styles of cropped pants available on the market - joggers, casual chinos and tailored skinny trousers are just some examples.

Master the art of styling them, however, and you can look stylish and in vogue.

Fans of cropped trousers include famous personalities such as street-style star Nick Wooster and Korean artist G-Dragon.

Mr Vestan Low, menswear merchandiser for Tangs, believes that "it's a style everyone can try as long as he is interested in trying something new or different".

He offers some tips:

1. Choose a pair with a good fit

As with most menswear, the fit of the trousers is important.

Mr Low recommends buying a pair that is cropped just above the ankles, in a slim fit, as these are "flattering and not that far a departure from regular slim fit trousers".

He suggests buying one that is 90 per cent of the wearer's regular trouser length.

Colour-wise, black or navy are always safe. Alternatively, go for khaki and beige for some colour. For those giving the trend a try, buy a pair in a classic colour to maximise its use.

2. Know how to style it

A pair of cropped trousers can be very versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

Mr Low suggests wearing a jacket that matches the cropped pants and a pair of solid coloured socks for a formal occasion. For a more casual look, drop the jacket and consider socks in a fun or fancy print.

3. Accessorise

Always spruce up the outfit up with accessories. Accessories add an interesting accent to any outfit and these can include detachable wallet chains and woven leather belts.

Mr Low adds: "Of course, a cropped length brings attention to the ankles and feet, so varying the choice of socks and footwear can make a great difference to the outfit and style."
