Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is being ridiculed online after she mistook George Orwell's Animal Farm for a fuzzy tale about caring for animals.

While ostensibly about farm animals, the 1945 dystopian tale is an allegory about the pitfalls of revolution and dictatorship.

Shetty's comments appeared in a Times of India newspaper article about a new school syllabus for English literature.

Welcoming new additions such as Harry Potter, she said it was important to cultivate children's imagination - and added that "Animal Farm should be included as it will teach the little ones to love and care for animals".

Twitter immediately went nuts with "reviews" such as: "Fifty Shades Of Grey is an amazing colouring book. Children will love it #ShilpaShettyReviews"
