Top 5 most memorable Super Bowl half-time shows

Pop star Katy Perry was on fire at her jaw-droppingly spectacular half-time show at the Super Bowl on Sunday. The time-filler performance has turned into a phenomenon in its own right and even those with no interest in the football match-up know about it.

Here are five spectacles which have entertained, moved and/or scandalised at the Super Bowl.

1. Janet Jackson, 2004

This was possibly the most notorious Super Bowl performance as Jackson's breast was exposed during a dance routine with Justin Timberlake. And everyone learnt a new term - "wardrobe malfunction". Who says football can't be educational?

2. Michael Jackson, 1993

It was Janet's elder brother Michael who kicked off the era of the mega extravaganza and turned the half-time show into an Event. While it did not feature mechanical lions or wardrobe malfunctions, it did have slick dance moves from the King of Pop.

3. Madonna, 2012

Now this is an entrance fit for a pop queen. Madonna sailed into the stadium on a massive throne as a phalanx of Roman soldiers cleared a path. The buzz for the then-upcoming MDNA album added to the electricity.

4. U2, 2002

The Irish rockers commemorated the still-fresh 9/11 attacks with a scrolling backdrop listing the victims who perished. At the end of Where The Streets Have No Name, Bono opened up his jacket to reveal a stars-and-stripes lining.

5. Beyonce, 2013

Beyonce put on a booty-shaking, diva-licious show of hits such as Crazy In Love. And that was before Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams came on stage for the long-rumoured Destiny's Child reunion. The trio knocked it out of the park with Bootylicious, Independent Women and Single Ladies.
