You can't plan it, but having Tom Hanks run into their wedding photo shoot made the day extra special for newlyweds Elisabeth and Ryan.

The couple were taking photos at Central Park in New York when the two-time Oscar-winning actor turned up in jogging gear.

He stopped to introduce himself, congratulate them and take a selfie with the bride and groom.

He also kissed the bride's hand, photos showed.

Hanks, 60, posted the selfie on social media on Sunday (Sept 25), and the couple's wedding photographer Meg Miller posted a collage of the encounter on Instagram on Monday.

"Yesterday's wedding was so beautiful! Elisabeth and Ryan you planned one amazing celebration. The icing on the cake was @tomhanks stopping in Central Park to wish them congratulations," wrote Ms Miller on Instagram.

Groom Ryan said Hanks even offered to officiate for them, as the actor is an ordained minister.

"A man tapped us on the shoulder and introduced himself as Tom Hanks. It was pretty surreal," Ryan, who is on his honeymoon in Hawaii, told BBC.

"He actually offered to perform our ceremony as he's ordained, but we'd only just taken our vows. Maybe he can help us renew them one day. We didn't realise how much was circulating about us until we landed here."
