Singapore Media Festival back to showcase Singapore talent

The Singapore Media Festival returns for its third edition from Nov 23 to Dec 9.

This was announced yesterday by the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) at Cannes Film Festival, where Singapore has two feature films in competition - Boo Junfeng's psychological prison drama Apprentice and K. Rajagopal's A Yellow Bird, about a man who has been released from prison.

Mr Robert Gilby, chairman of the Singapore Media Festival's advisory board and managing director of The Walt Disney Company (SEA), said: "The festival will serve as an excellent springboard for global media players venturing into Asia and for Asian media professionals seeking international exposure."

The umbrella festival is hosted by MDA and comprises the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), Asia TV Forum & Market, ScreenSingapore and Asian Television Awards.

ScreenSingapore will host its second edition of the Southeast Asian Film Financing Project Market, which connects promising film-makers and producers with potential investors for their upcoming projects.

Up to 15 projects will be selected and featured at the project market in December.

The media festival is also a platform for Singaporeans to reach out to Asia. To nurture and showcase up-and-coming Singapore talent, the film festival will commission a new short by a local film- maker each year.

Gladys Ng, who won the prize for Best Singapore Short Film at SGIFF last year, is the first film-maker to be commissioned.

Three new members are joining the umbrella event's advisory board - chief executive officer of Emperor Motion Pictures Albert Lee, president of digital marketing agency Tribal Worldwide Asia Jeff Cheong and chief marketing officer of multinational consumer goods company Unilever International Aseem Puri.

More than 20,000 media industry players and members of the public gathered for the media festival last year, which had US$263 million (S$360 million) in sales transactions in film, television and digital content collaborations.

At Cannes, short films from Singapore - Shaun Joash Law's A Mere Wish and Khalishan Liang and Nurliyana Abdul Rahim's The Missing Words - will be showcased at the Cannes Short Film Corner.
