Rui En's 'black face' at Star Awards draws online brickbats

SINGAPORE - Was local actress Rui En too blatant with her displeasure at the Star Awards Show 1 on Sunday?

The popular actress and host was widely expected to take home a prize at the awards organised by Mediacorp, but went home empty handed instead.

Whilst seated on stage beside actress Jeanette Aw, who bagged six awards, Rui En's displays of unhappiness were captured on national television. She crossed her arms and rolled her eyes at times.

All 10 actors and actresses who were nominated for the Favourite Character Award were seated on stage as they awaited the results last night.

After the show, Rui En was on the way to the lift when she encountered some reporters.

When asked if she was disappointed, she said in Mandarin: "What? Not at all.

"Awards have never been my goal, my goal is to improve my acting."

She also told her fans not to take the awards too seriously.

"The annual awards are basically a game, don't take it too seriously. I know my fans will be disappointed, but I hope they can pick themselves up and just move on... and try better next year."

She also said she was not used to sitting on stage in this way.

Aw, 35, won the Social Media Award, the Favourite Female Character Award, the Favourite Onscreen Couple Award and the Regional Most Popular MediaCorp Artist for three countries (Malaysia, Cambodia and Indonesia).

Some blasted Rui En for being rude online, while others voiced their support for her.

The episode had generated some Internet memes by Monday.
