Pet Shop Boys' Always On My Mind voted best cover version in BBC poll

English electronic pop band The Pet Shop Boys' cover of the country song Always On My Mind has been voted the top cover version of all time in a BBC poll.

The broadcast station said the song came out tops after the public was asked to vote for their favourite cover version from a list of 50 songs compiled by BBC producers and DJs.

Always On My Mind was written by John Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson, and many singers have covered the song, including Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson. Nelson won a Grammy for his version in 1982.

The Pet Shop Boys' take on the song was the number one song in Britain during the Christmas of 1987, 15 years after Presley took it to the top 10, said The Telegraph.

In the BBC poll, Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' Hurt was second and The Stranglers' version of Dionne Warwick's Walk On By came in third.

The top 10 tracks in the poll:

Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind

Johnny Cash - Hurt

The Stranglers - Walk On By

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Soft Cell - Tainted Love

Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

Muse - Feeling Good
