SINGAPORE - An inaugural award celebrating excellence in theatre productions for children aged 12 years and below will be given out at the Life! Theatre Awards for the next three years, starting 2016.
The award, titled Best Production for the Young, will be administered by The Straits Times and supported by the National Arts Council.
This was announced by the council's chairman, Professor Chan Heng Chee, who was Guest-of-Honour at the ceremony for the 15th M1-The Straits Times Life! Theatre Awards, held on Monday afternoon at the Esplanade.
The new award places the spotlight on the burgeoning activity in the children's theatre scene, and will give recognition to outstanding professionals working hard to raise the standards in this field.
To be eligible for the award, these kids' shows must be produced by Singapore companies. The Straits Times estimates that there are about 10 to 15 such shows a year here.
For the first three editions, a dedicated panel of judges will be convened to judge this award, comprising theatre educators as well as journalists who are also parents.
This is separate from the judging panel of the rest of the Life! Theatre Awards, comprising theatre reviewers and academics, who deliberate on the winners of 12 other categories of awards.
The Life! Theatre Awards was started in 2001 and is the longest-running awards ceremony dedicated to the Singapore theatre scene.
