Pop star Madonna is set to perform in Singapore for the first time. It will probably happen this year at the National Stadium, but a date has not been set.

In a Facebook post, Mediacorp VizPro, the local coordinator of the concert, confirmed that the American star's ongoing Rebel Heart tour will make a stop here.

The police has confirmed that a licence has been issued for the concert.

Previously, the Singapore date was listed as Feb 28 on the singer's official website before it was taken down.

The 57-year-old American singer was banned from performing her controversial Girlie Show World Tour here in 1993, when police said her performances in the tour show "border on the obscene... (and are) known to be objectionable to many on moral and religious grounds".

If confirmed, Singapore is one of several stops as part of the tour's Asian leg, which includes Japan, Hong Kong, Taipei, Macau, Bangkok and Manila. Both dates in Hong Kong are sold out.
