LOS ANGELES • Actor Jim Carrey said on Tuesday that he was "shocked and deeply saddened" by the apparent suicide of a former girlfriend.

Irish-born Cathriona White, 30, a make-up artist who was pictured out with Carrey in the past several months, was found dead in her Los Angeles apartment on Monday night, said Los Angeles deputy chief coroner Ed Winter.

Carrey, 53, said in a statement that he was "deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona".

"She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled," he added.

"My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt."

Winter said a drug overdose was suspected because several pills were found near White's body.

Celebrity website TMZ.com said White and Carrey met in 2012, had an on-and-off romance, and rekindled their relationship in May before splitting up last Thursday.

She sent a cryptic message on her Twitter account that day that read: "Signing off Twitter, I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest."

She was found at her home on Monday evening by a friend who called emergency services. She had reportedly left a note.

Carrey, the slapstick star of movies including Dumb And Dumber (1994) and Bruce Almighty (2003), ended a five-year relationship with actress Jenny McCarthy in 2010.

His two marriages ended in divorce.
