Indian actress Sonam Kapoor has acquired the film rights of Singapore-based Indian author Krishna Udayasankar's mythological trilogy The Aryavarta Chronicles.

Udayasankar says Kapoor, one of Bollywood's highest-paid actresses, began chatting with her three to four years ago on Twitter about the books, a modern retelling of the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata, which have sold 80,000 copies in India as of earlier this year.

The books will be turned into three films, the first of which is expected to begin production next year.

Udayasankar, who will be part of the scripting and creative team, says she would love to see Kapoor play the female lead.
