According to heavy.com, the pun was first acknowledged on May 4, 1979, by the London Evening News, whice congratulated former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on her inauguration day by writing the headline "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie".

On Monday, the Internet world celebrated en masse, and even Singapore's Changi Airport and Marina Bay Sands joined in the fun. "May the 4th" became a top phrase on Twitter.
