(REUTERS) - Thousands of people in New York attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the largest human peace sign, as a tribute to the Beatles' John Lennon for his 75th birthday.

Upon seeing the large crowd, his widow Yoko Ono said: "This is the best birthday present to John!"

Lennon, founder of the 1960s band The Beatles, was born on Oct 9, 1940, in the British city of Liverpool, and came to the United States in the early 1970s. In 1980, the singer and peace activist was shot at the entrance to his New York apartment block and died of his injuries within minutes.

But as people of all ages show in Central Park, his spirit and ideals for peace continue to live on. If successful, the event, organised by the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus and Yoko Ono, would set the first record in the category.
