CHINESE NEW YEAR AT THE PROMONTORY

It will be a Chinese New Year-themed celebration at Prudential Marina Bay Carnival's ongoing series of concerts this weekend.

The line-up will feature home-grown Mandopop singers and bands such as singer-songwriter Becka (right, tonight), beatboxer The Zadon (tomorrow) and Kaitlyn Lin (Sunday).

NIGHT OF CHEER PUNK

Japanese experimental punk quartet Ni-hao! - known for their colourful outfits, raucous performances and catchy ditties - will play their first Singapore show at this gig.

Other acts in the line-up include Geylang Ska-Jazz Band, S*I*N x Schizophrenic Wonderland, Afsa, Reyerta and Shak Tii.

FREE PERFORMANCES: FOREWORD FEBRUARY

The Esplanade's Foreword February series of free shows taking place this whole month focuses on the use of words, stories, poems and literary text in music.

The home-grown music acts playing this weekend and the coming week include electronic duo .gif (above, comprising Nurudin Sadali, left, and Chew Wei Shan), whose set on Sunday will see them set their lush soundscapes to local poetry.

Other acts include pianist Chi Sheng and singer Sia Yeun, who perform tonight and tomorrow respectively, as well as dikir barat groups - Republic Polytechnic's Wira and Endang Ratiana Pekacah and Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Adiratna (Singapore) - which perform tonight.

SUNDAY METAL SERVICE

This metal gig will be headlined by Venom Inc, a British trio (above, from left, Anthony Bray, Tony Dolan and Jeffrey Dunn) made up of former members of pioneering metal band Venom who released their album, Ave, last year.

Also on the bill are German outfit Rage, Finnish band Mors Principium Est and Singapore act Bhelliom.
