Fans prepare to say farewell to Juan Gabriel

Hundreds of fans waited patiently outside Mexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes on Monday hoping to be allowed to enter the palace ahead of Mexican singer Juan Gabriel's official tribute and funeral.

MEXICO CITY (REUTERS) - Fans of Juan Gabriel are singing farewell in Mexico City.

Hundreds of people have traveled from across the country for the wake of the Mexican singer, who died last week.

"It is important to be here because you're going to feel his vibe. Although he is dead, to feel and see all these people, Mexicans and people from all over the world, giving their final farewell is the most beautiful memories that you will have," said Colombian fan, Lilian Céspedes.

The prolific songwriter and performer was known for his powerful love ballads.

He sold millions of albums and earned his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

And to many fans, he was more than just a musician.

"For me Juan Gabriel was not an artist, for me Juan Gabriel was like part of the family. I felt the loss as if it had been a grandfather, an uncle," said one fan, Carlos Flores.

A loss - that like his songs - has left many here in Mexico heartbroken.
