BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) - Lesbian romance drama Carol led the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday (Dec 10) with five nods, including the top category for best drama, while Wall Street movie The Big Short led the comedy film categories with four nominations.
One of the biggest surprises, however, was the nomination of Mad Max: Fury Road for Best Motion Picture Drama and its Australian director George Miller for Best Director,
An audible gasp also went up when veteran star Sylvester Stallone was nominated for Best Actor for his role in the Rocky movie reboot Creed, from the audience that was up at dawn in Hollywood for the nominations
The Golden Globes are chosen by 90-plus journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association - winners will be announced at a televised ceremony on Jan 10, hosted by Ricky Gervais - rather than members of the film industry.
But the Globes often mirror picks by critic's groups and are seen as one of the indicators of Oscar contenders. Last year's Golden Globe best comedy/musical film winner, Birdman, went on to win the best picture Oscar
