Reality TV star and Olympic gold medallist Bruce Jenner told his family members of his decision to become a woman, People magazine reported on Wednesday.

The 65-year-old former decathlete, famous for starring in reality television show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, will apparently star in a reality series documenting his transition, according to published reports.

Jenner is not the only prominent figure to have openly talked about undergoing a sex change operation.

American film director, screenwriter and producer Lana Wachowski was born Laurence "Larry" Wachowski. Before her transformation, she and her brother Andrew "Andy" Wachowski were known as the Wachowski Brothers. They achieved international fame and success for writing and directing the Matrix film franchise. It is said that she completed her gender reassignment procedure after wrapping up the movie Speed Racer in 2008. She made her first public appearance as Lana in July 2012, and is the first major Hollywood director to come out as transgender.

2. Jan Morris

Welsh historian, author and travel writer, Jan Morris was one of the most successful journalists to emerge in the 1960s. She was born James Humphrey Morris, but began transitioning in the mid 1960s. In 1972, she underwent sex reassignment surgery in Morocco. She has published dozens of books, including the trilogy Pax Britannica, about the rise and fall of the British empire. She began work on the trilogy as a man and completed it as a woman in 1978.

3. Abigail Chay

Chay is one of Singapore's most famous transgender comediennes and entertainers. The skinny, broad-mouthed comedienne is best known for her roles as Aunty Abigail in local TV sitcom Under One Roof in the 1990s, and as a lonely ghost in the Channel 5 comedy series Maggi And Me in the 2000s. She was born Caesar Chay Tuck Kwong, but at age 22, she underwent a sex reassignment surgery to become female. Her surgery and tumultuous love life were dramatised in a Hong Kong musical in 2012.

4. Laura Jane Grace

Laura Jane Grace was born Thomas James Gabel, and is an American musician best known as the frontman and lead singer of famed punk rock band Against Me!. Grace publicly came out as a transgender woman in 2012, ceasing use of her birth name and taking the name Laura Jane Grace. Her sixth studio album with Against Me! is titled Transgender Dysphoria Blues (2014), and deals with the themes of gender dysphoria.

5. Amanda Lepore

Amanda Lepore, born Armand Lepore, is a famous American model, nightlife and fashion icon. She has served as a muse for photographer David LaChapelle's work, and is best remembered for appearing in advertisements for M.A.C Cosmetics and fashion brand Heatherette. She underwent gender reassignment surgery at age 19 in New York in 1989. In the 1990s, she established her career as a nightlife figure.
