JACKSON'S FATHER SUFFERS STROKE

Joe Jackson, patriarch of the Jackson family of musical performers, suffered a stroke hours before a huge birthday bash in his honour on Sunday, and is being treated in a Sao Paulo hospital. Jackson, who was in Brazil to celebrate his 87th birthday, was diagnosed with a stroke associated with cardiac arrhythmia, the Albert Einstein hospital said.

The local media said the US$200,000 (S$273,000) celebration went on as planned, even though the guest of honour was in hospital.

AI WEIWEI HAS GERMAN VISA

Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei has been given a visa to travel to Germany, he told Agence France-Presse on Monday, just days after the police handed him back his passport following a four-year confiscation.

The authorities had denied him a passport after detaining him for 81 days in 2011. His six-year-old son lives in Germany. Ai told The New York Times last week that he would travel to Germany "as soon as I get a visa".
