(REUTERS) - Australian director, writer and producer Baz Luhrmann's theatre production Strictly Ballroom The Musical is due to open in London's West End.

While he hasn't met all the cast in person, he gave his seal of approval via Skype.

Lead actors Jonny Labey (Scott) and Zizi Strallen (Fran) who are set to star in the show explained it's 'incredible' to be working on a Luhrmann production.

Strictly Ballroom The Musical premiered in Sydney, Australia in April 2014 before moving to several other cities in Australia - and then onto the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, England in 2016.

Based on Luhrmann's 1992 film, it tells the story of ballroom dancer Scott Hastings who defies the rules and incorporates his own moves - along the way falling in love with his dance partner Fran.

While the stage version is similar to the film, there has been a new character written in to the London version to help audiences understand the action. British musician and actor Will Young takes on the new role of band leader Wally Strand, a character his co-stars say helps to translate the film into a stage production.

Strictly Ballroom The Musical was created by Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin and directed in Leeds and now in London by Drew McOnie. The book is by Luhrmann and Craig Pearce.

The show opens at the Piccadilly Theatre on March 29, 2018.
