HONG KONG - An attention-seeking Mayday fan proposed to his girlfriend at the Taiwanese band's concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum on Tuesday, and now the organiser has to pay for it.

The organiser has been fined more than HK$10,000 (S$1,770), after the fan sidetracked the band and the gig ended 10 minutes late, said Ming Pao Daily News.

It was a full house on Tuesday, the fourth night of Mayday's 10-night stop in Hong Kong, when the music stopped in a singalong and the fan came to the band's notice, saying he was asking his girlfriend to marry him.

Vocalist Ashin said: "You're proposing? Okay, the Coliseum staff are quite busy, they not only have to maintain order but also have to be your witnesses."

When the band's leader Monster suggested the couple wanted Ashin to be their witness, the singer responded: "You want us as witnesses? That costs more money! You do your thing, I'll sing."

Monster joked about playing You Are Not Truly Happy for the couple, and Ashin started singing Wu Bai's The Person Who Weeps Bitterly.

When the fan still did not propose, Ashin advised the girlfriend to keep her boyfriend waiting for an answer till the end of the gig.

Later, the fan incurred the wrath of other fans when he left a message on a Mayday Internet forum, asking whether anyone took a photo of his proposal, said Ming Pao.

A number of fans condemned the man for his selfish behaviour, and someone said he should pay the fine instead.
