BEIJING • Hong Kong star Andy Lau is having his first bite at a Best Actor prize at China's Golden Rooster Awards.

The multiple Hong Kong Film and Golden Horse Awards winner was named in nominations announced on Wednesday by the Chinese Film Association for his role as a desperate father searching for his abducted son in Peng Sanyuan's Lost And Love, say reports.

Up against him is Zhang Hanyu for his role in The Taking Of Tiger Mountain, a firm favourite with nine nominations. Also on the Best Actor list are Chen Jianbin, whose drama A Fool had garnered him a hat-trick of Best Actor, Supporting Actor and New Director accolades at last year's Golden Horse Awards, and Sun Weimin, who plays late Chinese premier Zhou Enlai in Who Is Undercover.

Nominations for The Taking Of Tiger Mountain, about a Chinese spy during the 1940s revolution, include those for Best Film, Director for Hong Kong's Tsui Hark, and Screenplay. The 3-D epic released in China last December has reaped box-office earnings of about 900 million yuan (S$197 million), Xinhua reported.

Vicki Zhao (Dearest), Tang Wei (The Golden Era) and Xu Fan (When A Peking Family Meets Aupair) are among nominees for Best Actress.

Works by fifth-generation Chinese film-makers Jiang Wen (Gone With The Bullets) and Chen Kaige (Monk Comes Down The Mountain) are missing from the list, while the Zhang Yimou romance Coming Home, starring Gong Li and Chen Daoming, takes only one nod for Supporting Actress for Zhang Huiwen. The box-office hit Monkey King: Hero Is Back is nominated for Best Cartoon Film.

The 30th Golden Rooster Awards will be held in Jilin city next month.
