LOS ANGELES (AFP) - American actress Hayden Panettiere has checked into a treatment centre for postpartum depression, her rep said on Tuesday.

Celebrity magazines Us Weekly and People quoted a statement as saying Panettiere, who had a girl in December last year with her fiance, professional Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, was voluntarily seeking professional help.

The 26-year-old star of the hit musical drama Nashville has been open about her struggle with depression.

Her character Juliette Barnes in the series also battles against postpartum depression.

"I suffered a bit of postpartum depression. You're not alone or crazy, ladies!" she recently revealed in Us Weekly.

She spoke further about the subject during a television show in September, saying she could relate to her character in Nashville. Juliette "went through that, which was something that I can very much relate to and something that I know a lot of women experience", she said.

At the weekend, the actress posted an upbeat tweet on how happy she was to have regained her slim figure since she gave birth to Kaya.

"Feeling like I'm #finally coming back in to my own body! mother #daughter #blessing #wellworthit," she wrote.
