SAN FRANCISCO • Mr Craig Newmark, so often accused of being a villain, is now doing his best to play hero and revive journalism.

In the late 1990s, the former IBM programmer built a service that allowed people to find apartments, jobs, computer parts, sexual partners, rides out of town and all sorts of other things through the newfangled consumer Internet.
