From sharing nostalgic snaps to showing off handmade cards, celebrities around the world were an active bunch on social media during Valentine's Day.

And if you celebrated Valentine's Day all by yourself, chances are some of these greetings would have cheered you up.

Here are seven of them:

1. Michelle Obama's back on Twitter

In her first tweet since stepping down as United States First Lady, Mrs Michelle Obama chose to pay tribute to her husband and former US president Barack Obama.

"Happy Valentine's Day to the love of my life and favourite island mate," she wrote. It was accompanied by a vacation photo of two pairs of feet (presumably the famous couple's) in the sand.

2. Jamie Oliver dishes out the nostalgia

The British chef, who married his long-term love Juliette Norton in 2000, dug through his archives to produce a throwback photo of the pair celebrating their first Valentine's Day in 1996.

"Happy Valentines my darling @joolsoliver. Hope you liked your homemade card!" he wrote in an Instagram post.

3. Love - from the sick bed

Getting the sniffles was no excuse for Madonna not to send a V-Day greeting and she duly obliged with a little ditty.

Looking a little worse for wear, the Queen of Pop crawled out of her sick bed to sing and wrote on Instagram: "Sick girl in bed in her nightgown. Not sung well but done with love!"

4. Sweet sunset, Kim

In a reminder to the world that their love still holds strong, reality star Kim Kardashian posted a sweet photo of her sharing a kiss with husband and rapper Kanye West at sunset.

"Happy Valentine's Day," said the simple caption.

5. Kenny G, god of sax

Saxophonist Kenny G, squeezing in as many puns as he could muster, crafted some special V-Day greeting cards on Twitter for his fans.

Among the gems: "I think ur saxy" and "let's practise safe sax".

6. Looking good in that dress, Liam

Singer Miley Cyrus thought it would be funny to see how her fiancee, Liam Hemsworth, would look in a dress.

So she photoshopped his face onto a heart-printed red dress she wore to the amfAR Inspiration Gala in June 2015.

"@liamhemsworth and I wish you a VERY loveyyyyy V-Day," she posted on Instagram, which was followed by several idyllic photos of the couple on a romantic beach holiday.
