This year's M1-The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards best actress nominees Tan Kheng Hua, Edith Podesta, Judee Tan and Jalyn Han do a dramatic reading of Taylor Swift's Shake It Off.

It's serious stuff. The best actress nominees for this year's M1-The Straits Times Life Theatre Awards had flexed their acting chops to get nods for their portrayal of traditional female roles - playing mother, daughter, wife and girlfriend.

But The Straits Times wanted to test them with a more challenging acting task - asking the actresses to attempt a dramatic reading of Taylor Swift's pop tune Shake It Off.

The four women - Tan Kheng Hua, 54; Edith Podesta, 37; Judee Tan, 36; and Jalyn Han, 55 - gave the 2014 mega hit a theatrical turn.

And act it up they did - showing they mean business, by being seriously funny too.

Sure, "haters gonna hate, hate, hate" but clearly they are "just gonna shake, shake, shake - shake it off".

"Taylor Swift - I hope you watch this," said Tan as she finished her lines, looked dead-straight at the camera, and climbed off her seat.
