SINGAPORE - The first S-class I drove was the W140, back in the 1990s. The third-generation modern S-class was as controversial as it was legendary - over-engineered, over-priced and, back then, overweight.

It was a barge of a car packed with innovations such as air suspension, double-glazed glass, rear vanity mirrors and soft-closing doors.
